But until that time we must resist the urge to offer pat answers or simplistic explanations to those who find themselves in a maelstrom of sorrow.  We all remember Job’s friends who concluded (wrongly) that Job’s suffering was caused by his sin.  God silenced those friends by saying, “You have not spoken of Me what is right as My servant Job has” (Job 42:7).  If I were God, I would have continued, “Now let Me explain to you why Job suffered.  Last April Satan came to Me and said, ‘The only reason Job serves You is because You are good to him.  But if You let me attack him, then he won’t serve You.’  So we engaged in this little wager and…”
Interestingly, God never explained to either Job’s friends or to Job himself the real reason for the catastrophes that battered Job.  Instead, the gist of God’s speeches to Job was, “Trust Me. I know what I’m doing.
Similarly, when Jesus was questioned about evils in the world, such as a man’s blindness since birth, the slaughter of innocent worshipers, or the collapse of a tower, He never attempted to answer the “Why?” question.  Why?  Not because there is no answer, but because the answer is beyond comprehension for those of us who are trapped in time.
